What is Clawdbot?
Clawdbot is an open-source personal AI assistant created and open-sourced by Peter Steinberger (@steipete) in December 2025. It connects Claude and other AI models to messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Discord, and more.
The name was a playful nod to Claude, Anthropic's AI model. The project gained traction quickly among people who wanted their own always-on AI assistant running on their devices.
Why the Name Change?
OpenClaw is a fork and continuation of the Clawdbot project, with a focus on consulting services. The new name reflects a broader vision that isn't tied to any specific AI model.
"Molt" refers to how lobsters shed their shells to grow. The assistant helps you shed old workflows and constraints. And yes—the lobster mascot stays.
